Matcha Catechins - EGCG: The Powerful Antioxidants Behind Matcha’s Wellness Benefits

What Are Catechins and EGCG?

Matcha is celebrated for its rich antioxidant profile, largely due to a group of plant compounds called catechins. Catechins are natural polyphenols found in green tea leaves that help protect the body from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Among these catechins, EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate) is the most abundant and biologically active, containing up to 137 times more of this potent antioxidant than standard green tea.

In simple terms, EGCG is a specific type of catechin, making it part of the broader catechin family. While several catechins exist in green tea, EGCG is considered the most powerful because of its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. As the primary catechin in matcha, EGCG constitutes over 60% of its total catechin content. Matcha stands out because you consume the entire powdered tea leaf, meaning you receive a higher concentration of these compounds compared to regular steeped green tea.

How Much Catechins Does Matcha Contain?

A typical serving of matcha uses about 2 grams of powder (roughly one teaspoon). This amount can contain approximately:

  • 120–140 mg of total catechins
  •  70–90 mg of EGCG

These levels can vary depending on the tea cultivar, growing conditions, and processing methods. Because matcha is shade-grown before harvest, the leaves develop higher concentrations of beneficial compounds, including catechins and amino acids.

How Much EGCG Is Ideal for the Human Body?

Research suggests that a daily intake of 100–300 mg of EGCG from natural sources is generally considered beneficial for most adults. Consuming 1–2 servings of matcha per day can comfortably fall within this range while also providing other supportive compounds like L-theanine and gentle caffeine.

Benefits of EGCG and other Catechins in Matcha

When consumed regularly, EGCG and other catechins help support cellular protection, heart health, metabolism, and immune function. They also contribute to matcha’s reputation as a wellness beverage by working synergistically with caffeine and L-theanine to promote calm focus and sustained energy.

This unique combination is what makes matcha more than just a drink—it’s a mindful daily ritual that supports both wellbeing and balanced energy.
